Matthew Sweet, the singer-songwriter who rose to fame with a ’90s power pop and alt-rock sound, has canceled a series of upcoming shows because of a health issue.

Sweet, whose hits include the 1995 song “Sick of Myself,” has been touring with the band Hanson as well as playing his Acoustic Trio tour.

An announcement was posted on Sweet’s Instagram page Monday.

“Due to a medical illness and on (doctor’s) advice, Matthew Sweet must cancel all remaining upcoming shows with Hanson, and his own headline dates, from October 10 thru November 16,” the post said.

“Matthew needs to pause traveling for a period of recovery,” the statement said, directing fans to obtain refunds. “We hope to have Matthew and his band back out on the road in 2025 … Thank you for your understanding, and please wish Matthew a speedy recovery, and a return to action soon.”

Sweet had been set to play The Narrows in Fall River, Massachusetts Tuesday, Oct. 15 before New York’s The Palladium Times Square with Hanson Wednesday, Oct. 16.

Sweet, who turned 60 this month, released the acclaimed album “Girlfriend” in 1991. The song “Girlfriend” from that album became an alt-rock hit, as did “Sick of Myself,” from Sweet’s 1995 album “100% Fun.”

The singer, who was born Sidney Matthew Sweet in Lincoln, Nebraska, became part of the music scene in Athens, Georgia alongside R.E.M.

Sweet also has a New Jersey connection, having formerly lived in Princeton.

His 15th album “Catspaw” was released in 2021.
