Jerod Mayo provides positive update on Christian Barmore

FOXBOROUGH – There was a point this fall where the Patriots thought they might be without Christian Barmore for the 2024 NFL season.

This summer, Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots and had to stop all football activities. As this season has unfolded, it appears there’s a chance the Patriots could get back their most talented defensive lineman.

On Thursday night, Barmore tweeted out an hourglass, which looked like a message that he could return sooner than expected. On Friday morning, Jerod Mayo provided a positive update on the defensive tackle’s situation.

“He’s progressing,” Mayo said. “He still has some checkpoints or hurdles to get over, but he’s progressing.”

When asked if he thought there is a better chance for Barmore to play this season than he did a few weeks ago, Mayo responded, “I would say, ‘yes.’”

Barmore has been around the Patriots this season and is seen in the locker room daily. Although he’s not at practice with his teammates, the 25-year-old has been working out with the Patriots training staff.

After his diagnosis, Barmore had to stop football activities due to the medication given to help his situation. It was similar for David Andrews, who missed the 2019 season when he was diagnosed with blood clots. Andrews’ treatment included being on blood thinners – and players can’t play or practice football while on that medication.

This spring, Barmore signed a four-year extension worth up to $92 million with the Patriots. That contract was given to him after he had a career year in 2023. Last season, Barmore led the Patriots in sacks (8.5), quarterback hits (16) and tackles for loss (13).

If Barmore returns, it would be a huge boost for the Patriots as injuries have piled up for this group. His absence has been a tough one for the Patriots defense, which is tied for 16th in the NFL in sacks.
