International Animation Day (IAD) is observed on October 28 every year. Launched in 2002 by the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA), a part of UNESCO, this day is all about inspiring fresh talent and celebrating the world of animation.

Reynaud was the first to project animated cartoons to a public audience in 1892 in Paris. Over the years, countless innovations have transformed art from simple hand-drawn sketches into today’s stunning digital masterpieces.
Now recognised in over 50 countries, International Animation Day honours the art form that continues to mesmerise audiences of all ages.
Animation comes in a variety of forms, such as stop motion, typography, 3D and traditional 2D animation. Each style brings its own unique flair and storytelling potential.

The theme for the 22nd edition of International Animation Day is yet to be announced. The theme for International Animation Day 2023 was “Animation: A Global Language”, focusing on the varied animation techniques in different countries and how it is a medium to unite the masses.

Although International Animation Day was first observed in 2002, the roots of animation trace back to 1892, when the first public performance of moving pictures took place at the renowned Emile Reynaud’s Théâtre Optique in Paris.
Whenever ASIFA has the opportunity, it strives to elevate the art of animation. Over the years, this event has expanded to 50 countries. The day is significant because it connects animators with the general public, creating opportunities for collaboration.
