Hugh Grant has recently explained how movie critics left a negative impact on his acting career.
Speaking on November 18 episode of the Smartless podcast, the Notting Hill actor admitted, “I entirely lost faith that I could do anything else. I believed my critics really.”
“But I see now maybe I was wrong,” said the 64-year-old.
Hugh revealed he would star in popular romance movies but as he had gotten older, he stopped getting offers to be the movie’s leading role.
The Bridget Jones’ Diary actor revealed he started getting more “quirky roles” at this age.
“Because at the very beginning, if I had any talent, it was for doing strange characters and silly voices and outlandish things that weren’t anything like me,” he explained.
Recalling his early acting days, Hugh mentioned that he and his troupe “used to perform in pubs with people like Mike Meyers. He was next on the bill and that was fun”.
Elsewhere in the interview, the Music & Lyrics actor opened up about working on more serious and darker project at this age.
“I wish I kept that other strand of my career going through all those years and years of rom coms,” he pointed out.
Hugh however clarified that he never said that he “hate the romantic comedies,” he’s “proud of them”.
“It’s nice to have made movies that actually entertain people and they’re much harder than people think. And in some cases, much better than the sneerers think,” added the actor.
