Cooler temperatures are expected to prevail through the weekend in Massachusetts, but there’s a shot that more rain could follow.
The weekend started off with some isolated showers, according to the National Weather Service on Saturday. Along with clouds and some fog, forecasters expect this to dissipate by later in the morning and “set us up for a beautiful mid-fall afternoon.”
Sunshine should dominate much of the region as Saturday progresses, with temperatures in the mid-70s, forecasters said. As well, shifting winds are expected to allow a dry air mass to move through the region in the afternoon and evening.
Clear skies continue going into Saturday night as overnight temperatures statewide should reach down into the 40s, forecasters said.
“Urban heat islands will likely be the saving grace for Boston, which looks to remain in the 50s
overnight,” forecasters added.
While Sunday is on track to have “pleasant and tranquil conditions,” clouds are expected to start rolling over the region, according to the National Weather Service. Low clouds, especially along the eastern Massachusetts coastline, could result in some isolated sprinkles of rain which should not limit any outdoor activities.
The odds of rain making a comeback are not expected to increase until after 7 p.m. on Sunday, forecasters said. Most communities have low chances of seeing rain throughout Sunday, though Pittsfield holds a 60% chance of having rain that day, according to an X post from the National Weather Service.
Then a cold front is expected to move through New England late Sunday night into Monday, forecasters said. As this happens, precipitation levels are expected to increase, with areas seeing widespread showers and as much as a quarter to three-quarters of an inch of rain going into Monday. Forecasters warn also of a few possible isolated thunderstorms and some instability.
“We will have to see how this pans out,” forecasters wrote, “but we could use the rain.”
Temperatures are expected to remain in the 60s, with New Haven and Hartford likely in the low 70s, the National Weather Service posted on X. The chances of rain across parts of the region mostly hover at around 90%, with an 85% chance of rain in Boston and Hartford.
Cooler temperatures are then expected past Monday, with areas seeing highs in the upper 50s and low 60s starting Tuesday, forecasters said. This trend could continue on through Friday, though some more dry weather could bump temperatures up.
“It will also be a bit breezy during the daylight hours,” forecasters wrote, “so definitely a fall-like feel.”
