    Here are the winners of Topsfield Fair's muffin, baked sweet treat contests



    Only the best muffins and baked goods took home first-place ribbons, among other prizes, at one of the country’s oldest fairs.

    The Topsfield Fair crowned its winners of the Fall Harvest Baked Sweet Treat Contest and the King Arthur Baking Company Favorite Muffin Contest on Thursday.

    The baked sweet treat contest required contestants to create dessert using a fruit or vegetables from a local farm stand that is harvested in the fall.

    Topsfield’s Casey Heffernan, placed first with her pumpkin cake with cinnamon cheese cream frosting.

    Rebecca Jani, of Lawrence, placed second with her apple hand pies while Salem’s Abigail Graumann placed third with her pumpkin chia scones.

    Each of the contestants won a gift certificate to Mann’s Orchard in Methuen and a ribbon from the Topsfield Fair.

    Meanwhile Kiki Taron-Kinney, of Marblehead, won first place in the favorite muffin contest with her banana nut muffins with maple walnut crumble. She secured $75, a gift basket, half a bushel of apples from Cider Hill Farm and a blue ribbon from Topsfield Fair.

    Loretta Steele and Smanatha Simonelli, both of Billerica placed second and third, respectively. Steele won $50, a bushel of apples from Cider Hill Farm and a red ribbon for her Pina Colada muffins with coconut streusel crumble.

    Simonelli won $25, a bag of apples from Cider Hill Farm, and a white ribbon for her coffee cake muffins.

    The Topsfield Fair, at 207 Boston St. in Topsfield on the North Shore, runs until Monday, Oct. 14. You can check Topsfield Fair’s website for daily hours.
