Ex-corrections officer avoids jail time in cell phone smuggling case

A former federal corrections officer accused of smuggling cell phones into a federal prison avoided jail time after a federal judge sentenced him to home detention and probation, U.S. District Attorney for the Easter District of Pennsylvania Jacqueline C. Romero said Friday.

Lee E. Moore, Jr., 36, of Sicklerville was accused by federal prosecutors of accepting payments from an inmate’s wife to smuggle cell phones into the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia in May and June of 2020, authorities said.

In June of 2020, Moore approached a second inmate about smuggling contraband into the facility or other special favors in exchange for payment, authorities said.

Moore, Jr. was sentenced to three years of probation and six months of home detention Thursday in federal court, officials said in a press release.

An attorney for Moore, Jr. was not able to be reached for comment Friday.
