BOSTON — Brad Marchand didn’t extend either his contract or his goal-scoring drought on Saturday night.

The Bruins captain disputed a report on Canadian television that he was close to a three-year extension with the team for whom he’s played his entire career. But that came after the 36-year-old forward scored in overtime to give Boston a 4-3 win over the Maple Leafs at TD Garden.

The Bruins were coming off a three-game winless streak and hadn’t played well. But after losing a 3-2 lead late, they regrouped and won in overtime.

“It was nice for the group to get rewarded for playing the right way. Sometimes you do it for a period or two and it doesn’t go the way that you want it to and you start switching up and get back into bad habits,” he said. “And we didn’t do that tonight even when they scored late, we just continued to play the right way. It paid off. It doesn’t always, but it’s definitely nice when it does.”

Marchand said it was a good sign that the team didn’t break down after losing the lead in regulation.

“Guys were composed, coaches were composed. There was a confidence that we still could get it done and we still had that opportunity. So I liked our attitude,” he said. “It’s one game. It’s not going to completely turn things around, but it’s a great way for us to realize that when we play the right way, we’re a good team. … It’s a great way to start building our foundation, understanding the way that we need to play to have success and something to build on.”

The goal was Marchand’s first of the season. After starting training camp late following offseason surgeries, he hadn’t found consistency or the back of the net through the first eight games. He said he hadn’t been dwelling on his scoring drought, but was still glad to put it behind him.

“I’ve been through many different stretches in my career, good and bad, and you got to stay even-keeled. I wasn’t getting too caught up in it, but it is nice to get that one out of the way for sure,” he said.
