Browns players rip fans for cheering Deshaun Watson’s injury; Calls QB 'model citizen'

Cleveland Browns players were unhappy with how fans reacted to Deshaun Watson likely tearing his Achilles during Sunday’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

While Watson was down after the non-contact injury fans were heard cheering. It didn’t sit well with Myles Garrett, who told reporters the fan “should be ashamed” of themselves.

“We don’t boo guys who are injured on the field, especially when the cart comes out,” the star pass rusher said. “We should be ashamed of ourselves as Browns and as fans to boo anyone and their downfall. (Watson’s) not perfect, he doesn’t need to be. None of us are expected to be perfect.”

“Man does pretty much everything right. He’s been a model citizen through college and also the pros,” Garrett added. “We can’t look down on the guy because of any mistakes on the field, or anything off the field. We don’t have any moral high ground to look down on the guy.”

Jameis Winston, who was the Browns’ emergency third quarterback, also expressed frustration with the fans.

“I am very upset with the reaction to a man that has had the world against him for the past four years and he put his body and his life on the line for this city every single day,” Winston said. “Regardless of your perception, regardless of what you thought should happen with him, he committed every single day that I’ve been here to be the best that he can be for this team.

Watson was the subject of dozens of lawsuits from multiple women alleging sexual assault and harassment. He settled 23 of the 24 lawsuits. He served an 11-game suspension in 2022 and the NFL updated its personal conduct policy a year later.

A new complaint surfaced in September that alleged the quarterback committed sexual assault and battery in 2020.
