Bill Belichick criticizes Jets for making ‘a lot of mistakes’ in loss to Patriots

Bill Belichick doesn’t like the Jets and he’s never afraid to criticize the franchise. That remained true Monday during his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” when he was asked about the New England Patriots’ comeback win over New York in Week 8.

And while Belichick said Jacoby Brissett had a “great drive” at the end of the game and Rhamondre Stevenson had a “big game,” he quickly turned his attention to how the Jets struggled.

“Tough day for the Jets. Used up all their timeouts in the first quarter, missed PAT, the scrambles,” Belichick said. “(Drake) Maye ran more than he threw for. Just a lot of mistakes by the Jets and that ended up killing them in the end.

“Big win for them. Big week for the Patriots at home against the Jets,” he continued. “The Jets are now in a tough spot.”

Belichick added more critique of Jets owner Woody Johnson and his decision to fire Robert Saleh despite how the defense thrived under him. Not long after Saleh was fired, New York traded for Davante Adams and agreed to a contract restructure with Haason Reddick.

“I think maybe from the outside it’s hard to understand why they would do some of the things they did,” Belichick said. “So, you have to ask the guy who did them.”

The Jets are 2-6 after Sunday’s loss and have the same record as the Patriots. New York had high expectations going into 2024 with a healthy Aaron Rodgers under center. But the 40-year-old quarterback hasn’t looked like his usual self. Davon Godchaux said after Sunday’s win that Rodgers “doesn’t look the same” and “doesn’t look mobile,” which helped the defense take advantage of the QB.

Interim coach called the loss a “moment of darkness” for the Jets as they now prepare to face a tough Houston Texans team on a short week.
