Paul Mescal has recently shut down odd stereotypes about Irish people during Saturday Night Live show.
In the SNL’s opening monologue, the Normal People actor jokingly said that he “takes great pride in being Irish” and noted that they’ve been “through a lot”.
“I do take great pride in being Irish… The Irish people have been through a lot,” remarked the 28-year-old.
“Centuries of British occupation, the Great Famine, mass emigration, that U2 album that automatically got downloaded on everyone’s phones,” quipped the actor.
Paul mentioned, “People also think we hate British people. That’s not true.”
“We just don’t consider them people,” continued the actor.
Paul also debunked the idea that Irish people wear kilts.
“No, that’s the Scottish. Traditionally, the Irish wear short shorts,” he said, as a picture of Paul in tiny shorts on screen.
The Aftersun actor continued, “I don’t think it’s working, bud.”
However, Paul shared that one Irish stereotype that, for him, was true.
“People often talk about the luck of the Irish. I do feel very, very lucky to be here. I’m in New York City,” stated the actor.
Paul explained, “I’m hosting SNL and this feels totally insane to me,” concluded Mescal with a smile.
He added, “People also think the Irish hate British people. That’s not true, we just don’t consider them people.”
