Zayn Malik cancelled his Newcastle sell-out gig just minutes prior to the stage time.
On Tuesday night, December 3, the former One Direction singer took to his Instagram stories before taking over the stage at the O2 City Hall in Newcastle to make a heartbreaking announcement at “the very last moment.”
“I’m so sorry to do this, but my voice just isn’t there at all tonight, and without it, there’s no show,” citing the reason that his voice has been affected amid the ongoing Stairway to the Sky tour, Zayn, 31, extended his heartfelt apologies. “I’m truly sorry to let you down, especially at such short notice…”
Explaining why the news was only shared minutes before the show and not in advance, the Dusk Till Dawn hitmaker said, “I held onto hope until the very last moment,” hoping his vocal condition would improve, but all that wait was in vain.
“I’m hopeful with some rest tonight I’ll be back on stage tomorrow,” he added before signing off. “My deepest apologies, Newcastle love you all xx.”
Zayn’s official statement comes after fans were left devastated at the venue following a tannoy announcement confirming that the show wouldn’t be going ahead.
“We apologise for the late notice. It was his [Zayn] fervent hope that he would be able to continue with the show. This is no longer possible,” they said, guiding the concert goers how to get their refunds or passes for rescheduled gig.
Fans have seen Zayn perform in cities including London, Manchester, Leeds, and Wolverhampton; however, those who were in attendance at Newcastle had to leave the venue with tears of sorrow and worry.
Zayn is due to wrap up his debut solo Stairway to the Sky tour in Edinburgh in just a number of days.
