Ozempic: Can Ozempic boost your brain function? Exploring the weight loss drug's many perks | – Times of India

Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs have proved to be revolutionary in managing the epidemic of obesity, treating diabetes, and somewhat reducing the risk of many chronic diseases. Studies are now proving its efficacy in improving brain health. According to a new study published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia, Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in people with Type 2 diabetes. This isn’t the only study that has demonstrated the benefits of GLP-1 drugs, but adds to the evidence that these drugs may show promise in prevention of dementia.
Known by its generic name, semaglutide, Ozempic is a weekly infection that helps lower blood sugar by supporting pancreas in making more insulin. While it isn’t approved for weight loss, many physicians prescribe it to obese people for shedding weight.
Ozempic mimics the effects of a naturally occurring hormone that sends satiety signals to your brain. It also slows digestion by increasing the time it takes for food to leave the body.
While Ozempic is behind many impressive weight loss stories, its role in improving mental health, particularly in the treatment of anxiety and despair, is being explored.

The new study comparing semaglutide with seven other diabetes drugs, including metformin, insulin, and liraglutide, analyzed three years of medical records from over 1 million patients aged 60 and above with type 2 diabetes.
Participants had at least one additional condition, such as obesity or high blood pressure, and were new to the diabetes medications. The study found that semaglutide users had a significantly lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease compared to those on other drugs, with the most notable difference being a 70% reduced risk compared to insulin users. The results were consistent across age, gender, and weight.

Reduces brain inflammation

The brain contains GLP-1 receptors, which can be activated to have neuroprotective effects. According to research published in the journal Nature, GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic that can reduce body weight also reduce inflammation in organs such as the brain, raising hopes that they can treat Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. This can enhance neuronal function, which may aid with anxiety and depression symptoms.

Improves mood, brings mental clarity

Maintaining stable blood sugar levels is important for brain health and blood sugar fluctuations are often associated with weariness, irritation, and mood changes. This can increase risk of anxiety and depression. Ozempic may indirectly support better mood and mental clarity by preventing blood sugar spikes.

Improves body image

Depression and low self-esteem are frequently linked to obesity and weight-related problems. Losing weight can boost one’s self-esteem and body image, both of which are beneficial to mental health.
Several studies have proved GLP-1 drugs’ effectiveness in dealing with inflammation, diabetes, obesity and heart disease, all of which could raise risk for dementia and Alzheimer’s, he said.
