The Khari Baoli area of Old Delhi is considered one of the largest and oldest markets for dry fruits in Asia. This market has its own rich history, still visible in every corner. One of the oldest shops, with a name that speaks to its past, is Lahore Dry Fruits. Given that Lahore is a major city in Pakistan, the shop’s name piques curiosity about its history.

In conversation with Local18, the owner revealed the story behind the shop’s name.

According to him, the shop was started by his maternal grandfather, Surendra Chawla, in 1958, and he is the third generation of his family to run it. The owner shared that his grandfather, who named the shop, used to live in Gujranwala in what is now Pakistan’s Punjab, approximately 80 km from Lahore. After partition, when he moved to Delhi, he opened this shop and named it Lahore Dry Fruits.

He further said that the area of Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi, adjacent to Fatehpuri Masjid, reminded his grandfather of many parts of Lahore.

This shop is one of the largest in the market, offering a wide range of dry fruits. The owner mentioned that they import dry fruits and spices from Afghanistan and many other countries. The shop’s popularity is evident from the number of people who travel from other states to purchase spices and dry fruits here.
