Rajasthan is known for its historical monuments and rich cultural heritage. Due to its geographical location, water is a precious resource in the desert state and locals, especially in rural areas, have various hacks and techniques to preserve it.

For centuries, the rural community has depended on wells, stepwells, ponds and several other centuries-old water-storing structures for their daily needs. Many of these ponds and wells continue to serve the locals even today.

One such ancient water reservoir is the 800-year-old Girawandi Pond in Nagaur district that continues to meet the water needs of local residents. Located in Joravar Pura village, Girawandi Pond is believed to have never run dry. It was constructed by the Thakur of Kheenvsar. The fact that this pond has remained a constant source of water for 800 years makes it truly unique.

Reports say the pond holds 52 bighas of water, sourced from a catchment area of 500 bighas. With a depth of approximately 40 feet, the pond is renowned for its pure water. This location is also known for its rare five species of ducks that inhabit the pond: black, white, yellow (turmeric-coloured), googly (light brown), and mallards.

This pond is also considered the village’s oxygen hub, as thousands of trees planted around its perimeter help purify the environment.

This 800-year-old pond, a source of water for centuries, has never dried up. Its fame has spread throughout Rajasthan, attracting people from nearby villages to collect its water. Villagers claim that even filtered water pales in comparison to the pond’s water, which is sweet and purportedly possesses medicinal properties.
