Woman hit after warning granddaughter about speeding vehicle, police say

A woman was hospitalized after being hit by a vehicle in a crosswalk on Saturday, which then sped away, police said.

The incident happened near Spring Street and Pleasant Street around 8:45 p.m. Police said they got multiple calls about a person hit by a vehicle.

The woman was lying on the sidewalk seriously hurt when police arrived.

She and her granddaughter were walking on a crosswalk with their dog when a vehicle is seen heading towards them. The group is seen running as the vehicle approaches them, the video shows. The car doesn’t stop prior to the crosswalk.

The woman warned her granddaughter before the crash, saving her and the dog from getting hurt, police said.

“The victim of this crash performed a heroic act by making sure her granddaughter was out of the way and safe,” Stoneham Police Chief James O’Connor said in a statement.

Police said they couldn’t find the vehicle that hit the woman. The car — which appears to have been a gray or silver SUV — was most likely speeding before it hit her and sped off, police said.

Firefighters treated the woman on the scene before she was taken to a hospital.

“We are committed to finding justice for the victim and her family, and we ask that the community assists us if they can,” O’Connor said.

Police encourage people with information on this incident to contact them at 781-438-1215—dial extension 3133.
