Robert Greene said he was impressed with Bessie Blount Griffin, a pioneering Black nurse and inventor, when he met her at her modest home in Newfield 16 years ago, months before her death.

“She was very down to earth,” said Greene, who is scheduled to lead a program about her Sunday at the Harrison Township Historical Society. “She had a sense of pride in what she accomplished, even with adversity she faced because of racism. She was happy to tell me all the things she had done.”
