These festivals feature handicrafts, unique cuisines, folk music and dance. From the Rann Utsav to the Sunburn festival, let’s take a look at five Indian winter festivals that you must visit at least once in your life.
Rann Utsav, Gujarat
The Rann Utsav festival is one of India’s most happening winter festivals, celebrated in Gujarat’s Kutch district. The festival is organised in the white desert of Kutch, featuring a wide variety of activities. From camel safaris to star gazing and folk music to classical dance performances, you will find everything here. The festival was founded by Gujarat Tourism in 2006. It was originally a three-day event but is now celebrated over months in the winter season. Reportedly, this year it will be marked from November 1 to February 28, 2025.
Pushkar Camel Fair, Rajasthan
Easily one of the biggest camel fairs in the world, the Pushkar Camel Fair is an iconic cultural festival in India. The Pushkar Camel Fair is a classic example of a blend between the traditional Rajasthani culture and a bustling livestock market. Visitors can experience local camel races and vibrant bazaars of local handicrafts during this festival. Apart from these, local folk music and dance performances will also be organised. This year, it will start on November 9 and end on November 15.
Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, Meghalaya
The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival in Meghalaya is a unique two-day festival that celebrates the blossom of cherry trees in the region. This year, the celebration will be marked from November 15 to 16. The unique festival hosts several contemporary events such as rock concerts and fashion shows, that visitors can enjoy while appreciating the natural beauty of Meghalaya.
Hornbill Festival, Nagaland
Often recognised as the ‘Festival of Festivals’ in India, the Hornbill Festival is a colourful celebration of the Naga heritage. The festival unites 16 tribal groups within the Indian state who gather together for a premier showcase of cultural music, dance, food and handicrafts. Visitors can also witness several local competitions here including the famous Naga chilli eating competition. What’s more, this year marks the 25th year of the Hornbill festival.
Sunburn Festival, Goa
Originating in 2007, the Sunburn festival has become an integral part of Goa’s history and culture. This three-day music festival is organised in Vagator in late December. It features several highlights for music lovers from all over the world.
